Checkerboard Pizza is a family owned and operated pizzeria and restaurant that has been a part of the Pinckney/Hamburg community for over thirty-five years. We are located on Pettysville Road at M-36, four miles east of downtown Pinckney, right next to Frosty’s IceCreamery and across the street from the Hamburg Fire Station. We offer a full dining experience, as well as carry out and catering services. Checkerboard opens daily at 11 a.m. and coupons can be found in the Val-Pak and Pocket Pleasers via the US Mail, Marketeer, many church bulletins, and online at our website at www.checkerboardpizza.com.

Checkerboard Pizza began as “Crow’s Nest Pizzeria” in February, 1971. Thirty-five years later, we are proud to be serving our third generation of Checkerboard Customers. These customers, along with their children and grandchildren, continue to enjoy our pizza, breadsticks, and family atmosphere. And family is exactly what we are and always have been here, from the beginning, with brothers Bob and Don, through today, with Kevin and Hilary who, along with her sister Gwen, literally grew up working here.  Many of the people working at the Checkerboard are related, either directly or indirectly and, so far, five marriages have resulted from working at the pizzeria.  In addition, Phyllis Walz, (Bob’s mother-in-law), an original “Crow’s Nest” employee from 1971, greets many of our customers by name. 

And now a few words about our food. We pride ourselves on our pizza made with our homemade dough and the highest quality ingredients. Unique to Checkerboard are our original Salad and Taco pizzas. We also feature subs, and fresh salads, as well as entrees such as lasagna, spaghetti and real “Up North” pasties. Want a snack? Checkerboard Pizza has appetizers ranging from cheese sticks to nachos to our famous “Cheesy Wedges.” Finally, ask your neighbors – no visit to Checkerboard is complete without a basket of our hot garlic bread sticks. As for specials, we have daily luncheon specials from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. We also offer multiple pizza specials to feed the entire family.

As for our dining room, it has seen some recent updating, with the addition of seven new televisions, with a variety of sports, news and family channels.  If a Detroit team is playing, the game is on at the Checkerboard, and we can tune into many other games (football, baseball, hockey, basketball and soccer) on request.  We also offer free high-speed wireless internet at the Checkerboard for anyone who wants to bring in their laptop.  Over the coming year, a number of other updates will be made to the dining area, all with the goal of making your time at the Checkerboard comfortable and enjoyable.
